Interview with Aakanksha Singh

How did you know that anchoring and acting was your right calling?

I am an extrovert since childhood. I remember vividly how in school and college I used to participate in various plays, debates, elocution competitions, anchoring events etc. which gave me immense confidence to stand on a stage and face the audience and also made me realize my abilities of quick thinking, spontaneity and an inbuilt sense of humour. The applause and accolades I used to receive post my performances continue
to positively reinforce my career of choice.

How is the YouTube and Web series industry different from the big-screen industry?

  • What is required of the actors:
    • Youtube and Web series industry requires actors to completely immerse themselves in a role with whom the audience can connect whereas in big screens, movies are often led by star power.
  • What the audience expects:
    • When a consumer is viewing a particular Youtube or web series content, multiple things are also vying for his attention ( social media, family, daily chores and various other distractions) so unless the content is gripping enough and binge-worthy, ften the audience abandons the web series mid-way whereas in big screens audience has made an upfront investment (travelling to the theatre, purchasing the tickets, eatables and is also confined in the theatre for a good 2.5-3 hours in darkness).
    • Hence no distractions and it becomes easier for the big screen industry to get the undivided attention of the viewers for those 2.5-3 hours.
  • Business model:
    • Youtube and Web series industry makes money through two primary mediums- advertisements and subscriptions. To recover the investment, production houses and OTT platforms need the content to drive viewership and subscriptions.
    • For eg. Scam 1992 web series not only increased the awareness and viewership of Sony Liv, but it also increased its paid subscriptions. Hence people who subscribed also started consuming its other popular content inside the app whereas in the big screen industry, movies are under pressure to recover their production costs within the first couple of weekends.
    • There is also increased availability of audience insights for youtube channels and web series OTT platforms (demographics, income segment, past viewing habits etc.) leading to much better customization and personalization experience and recommendation engine whereas the big screen industry rarely has an insight on the actual audience who is consuming its content.

How essential is homework and planning in the process of being an anchor?

Anchoring is a job done in real time, in front of an audience and with the singular focus of orchestrating the entire sequence of event/ program while keeping the audience engaged. With this context, homework and planning in the form of audience research, knowledge and internalizing the event flow, customising and preparing the events’
script with a scope of improvisation. Also, worst case scenario planning is critical to pull off the job in a satisfactory manner.

What was your first huge anchoring event and how did it go?

My first huge anchoring event as an amateur was hosting a college cultural fest for around 4 hours. It was challenging to say the least as I had to be constantly on my toes, being aware of the current stage performances happening, keeping a pulse on the state of audience reactions as well as constantly coming up with contextual witty one-liners for the next event.

Considering the demographics of the audience, it was not easy to keep the college crowd completely focused on the events happening on stage, one below average performance and half of the crowd would disperse the very next second to the nearest food stall.

Whereas my first anchoring episode as a professional on a music channel on TV was relatively seamless as firstly it was professionally managed and secondly while shooting for TV as a Video Jockey (VJ), the camera is one’s audience and me also being an actor found it less challenging to connect to it.

What makes your anchoring and style stand out? What is your special touch and style?

Though I stick to the basic script provided to me, I also try improvising my lines along with voice modulations, non-verbal gestures like posture, hand movements, facial expressions etc. My personal touch and style is through my smiling demeanour and an innate ability to send across a friendly and relatable vibe towards the camera and the audience.

What preparation do you undertake before the event?

I ensure that the final script is available with me at least 48 hours before the event with the agenda of the event, guest list if any and target audience specified. I also ensure to finalize my dress code for the event well in advance. On the day of the event, I make sure that I reach the venue before time to do a recce of the stage and to do a dry run for
myself to get in the groove.

You have also worked on several Girliyapa and TVF sketches. How was the experience like?

I have had a great experience working with Girliyapa and the TVF team as a whole as one gets to learn a lot on set as there are multi-talented people around with huge social media following, with a proven body of work and whose creativity in these sketches make the characters relatable and believable to the viewers.

How extensively did you need to pursue extra knowledge before anchoring and acting?

For acting especially I did a course with “Anupam Kher’s Actor Prepares” which helped me widen my range as an actor as it taught me the importance of controlling once breath, voice modulations, giving the appropriate facial expressions, correct body language etc. but in the case of anchoring my extrovert nature, good communication skills and spontaneous nature has helped me in honing and improving my skillsets
on the job.

Looking back at what you know now with all your experience, what would you do differently?

If I look back and reflect in the last three years of my career as an actor and anchor I would have done two things differently:

  • I would have started much earlier pursuing this field (There is no substitute for compounded experience and personal networking in this field)
  • I would have invested more time and effort in creating content myself maybe as a youtuber and in turn increasing my social media presence

What advice would you give future anchors/emcees?

Firstly find out if you are truly passionate about anchoring and not interested in it just because of the glamour quotient involved. Be ready for initial setbacks, occasionally difficult crowd, unplanned sudden script changes as well as on stage goof ups and lastly anchoring is a hugely satisfying career with lot of variety, memorable experiences and
life changing encounters.

Rapid Fire:

  • Have you ever taken anything from set?
Extra Mc Veggies and fries for my family 😛 but honestly every time I take back a lot of knowledge and learnings from each set
  • If you were to host your own reality tv show, what would it be like and what would you call it?
Since I have this dream of opening my own restaurant one day, the reality shows name would be “Akki’s Tikki’s” and the concept would be where one particular contestant would be in charge of managing a struggling restaurant and turning it around in one month by doubling its revenues.
  • A rumour you’d like to start about yourself?
That I have been signed by Zoya Akhtar as the Lead female in her next movie.
  • If you were to write your autobiography, what will be its title?
MBA- Masters in Bouncebacks – AAKANKSHA
  • What would be 3 things I’d find on Aakanksha’s bedside table?
My sleeping eye mask, a novel and my TAB
