Interview with Nanaki Asthana

What or who inspired you to become an actor/AD and have you always wanted to be an actor?

My father Ragesh Asthana inspired me to become an actor. His love for his craft made me want to act and be a part of films in any possible way. He never gave up and always told me to keep learning , which was one of the reasons I wrote to Anurag Kashyap and became an AD.

What makes a good co-star?

Know your lines. Know your co-actor’s lines and be patient.

What was your very first performance like?

Funny story – my very first performance was when I was 3.  I was playing a Maharashtrian bride. I had absolutely no stage fright. My parents were in the audience and my father was so proud! That day I decided, I want to be on stage or in front of the camera.

What’s your dream role?

There are 2 actually, haha! I want to play the only female antagonist in a film. Something like what Priyanka Chopra Jonas did in “Aitraz” and “Baywatch”. Who doesn’t want to be a villain against Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson? And then I would like to do an Adventure/ Action film like Wonder Woman.

You have acted in The Insomniac and were an assistant director on Husband Material. How were your experiences working on each project?

When I landed up on the sets of “Husband Material” I had no clue what it’s going to be like. I didn’t know how to make call sheets or breakdowns. I learnt everything on the job in 2 days. It was a life changing experience to be working under a director like Anurag sir. It was do or die for me. I learnt so much from Taapsee Pannu. The way she prepares for every scene and gets into the skin of her character is crazy. For me, she is Rumi. ( her character in the film ).

“The Insomniac” on the other hand, was the first short film I did after my workshop with Neeraj Kabi. I started looking at scripts and characters from a different perspective. I have learnt so much from Neeraj sir not just about acting or performing , but about life. I would recommend his workshop to all the aspiring actors out there.

What can you tell us about any of your projects that are under the way right now?

Right now, I am doing a Hindi feature film. I cannot talk much about it. It’s a horror film and I’m very excited about it. I have never done a character or a film like this in my life.

What is your advice for future actors and actresses?

Watch good cinema. Watch 3 good films a day. Have faith in yourself. Never give up, no matter what.

Talk to us about NAN and your journey with it!

NAN has been a dream. I was supposed to launch my brand after 3 babies. I had thought I would give up acting one day and launch my brand. I sat my mother down last year and told her about the idea. We were in a lockdown and it was a good time for research. I just thought why not start now?

How do you handle the stress that comes with your job?

I start by being grateful. You can’t be stressed if you love what you do. I feel so lucky to be doing what I love. Very few people get that.

What was it like growing up and were you always interested in fashion?

I grew up with strong women around me. Women who were entrepreneurs in the garments sector.  My mother and my Nani(Grandmother) were a huge influence in my life. I learned everything about fashion from them.

How do you handle clients who are difficult to work with?

With a lot of love, patience and politeness. You have no clue who has had a bad day! Just think the best and move on.

How do you stay up to date with the current trends?

Research of course, but a lot of Instagram and Youtube!

You have an incredible career – what have been your highlights?

I think there’s a long way to go and I’m not even there yet. What I consider the highlights? Would be working on Manmarziyaan, going to France to attend a film festival where my first Indo-french feature film as an actor “The Disposal” was selected, and launching my baby, my brand NAN.

How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart?

My signature look would be a white shirt, blue jeans, and a pair of sneakers or Kurta – jeans.  What sets me apart is that I’m attached to my roots and I always have a part of my culture with me in the form of anything, an accessory or a piece of jewelry.

If I were to host a reality show of my own, It would be something to do with travelling and food. I would call it “Khaao piyo khisko” which means eat , drink and move on (to the next destination).
