Interview with David Putnam

You were a detective before becoming a writer – what made you change your profession?

I started writing in 1989 while still working as a detective. I had four agents and 156 rejections before I sold my first book to a publisher. I was on manuscript number 38 when I sold number 36 to the publisher. I didn’t make a change I continued writing until I retired from law enforcement. I didn’t sell a book until I had been retired for about two years.

How do you balance between writing and your personal life?

With discipline. I get up every day giving my writing first priority and I write at least one thousand words which equals four pages.

What inspires you to write?

I have always been an avid reader. One day while out in the middle of desert on a surveillance I was reading a book while waiting for the bad guy to move. It was an awful book, but I was trapped and had nothing else to read. When I finished I thought I could do better. I wrote the first four novels on the front seat of my cop car while waiting on criminals.

What’re your favourite genres to write about?

Mystery and Thriller. I like SciFi and fantasy and have written novels in these genres but have not sold them.

Who has been your favourite writer and what’s your favourite book?

My favorite book is Lonesome Dove (River God, Pillars of The Earth, Shogun). I have too many favorite authors, several in each genre. I have stacks and stacks of books in my TBR to be read pile. Raymond Chandler, John D. Macdonald, Taylor Reid, John Sanford, James Lee Burke and many, many others.

How do you deal with Writer’s Block?

I don’t get writers block because I write by the numbers. I have writing broken down into a numeric system. I get up in the morning and read and edit the previous twenty pages to get the timing, and tone, and cadence going again. Then I write four pages forward-a thousand words. In this way I can write a book in about four months.

For you, what makes a great story?

A great story is carried by a great voice. Voice is “the everything in writing.” If you conquer voice you don’t need anything else, the rest will come. In my numbers, there are three components of voice.

Your Bruno Johnson series received a great reception from the audience, how did you come up with the idea for the series?

All of my books have a snapshot of my career in law enforcement. When I started out I chose an emotional incident and write it as best I can. Then mold the book around that inciting incident. I have since started by picking a theme and two plot points (sometimes three) and then scene sequence wrapping the plots around the theme I use as an arc. Emotion is conflict so I picked a topic that was the most emotional to me. Children. Bruno Johnson Champions the right of children.

He’s an ex-cop ex-con and rescues children from toxic homes. He couldn’t do it when he was a cop because there were too many laws and regulations. Now he goes outside the law to rescue the children. That’s how I came up with the idea for that series of books.

Is the protagonist, Bruno Johnson, inspired by any real-life cops you have been in touch with?

Bruno Johnson has a big chunk of me in the character. He does things I wish I could’ve.

Do you share any traits with your protagonist?

His ability to chase down harden criminals and still remain human.

What is the best thing that has happened after you started writing?

After I sold my first book I woke up one morning to find and email in my box. It was a personal email from Michael Connelly saying that my book kept him up all night. After twenty-five years of writing I had validation.

How do you manage/ take criticism?

Yikes, just like everyone else not so well. My wife tells me I shouldn’t read reviews. But I do adjust something in the books if there is a consensus about a certain point.

What has been your best piece of writing advice?

That’s simple, write every day. Never stop.
