Interview with Shashwat

How long have been practicing makeup artistry?

Well, it has been over a year now. I started last year inmid-June while everything was under lockdown. I was all hyped up after watching this YouTube original called Instant Influencer by James Charles and just couldn’t resist creating one of their Anime looks by a fellow contestant and now Idol- Indigo. I did it out of the blue unaware of the fact that how deeply would I engrossed in it within a year haha. Fortunately, it turned out pretty decent and I got some extremely positive reviews on it, whereas now when I look back at it, I can tell they were just being kind lmao.

What is Beauty for you?

Beauty for me is what is reflected from you inside out. I wouldn’t be specifying makeup as being the only part of beauty as I still prefer to go on with my natural self whenever possible as that is what makes me feel calm and relaxed. Watching people be comfortable in their own skin, bodies brings an honest smile to my face. Nevertheless, makeup has its own beauty aspects.

It’s like from that song ‘Most girls’ it goes like-  “Some days you feel so good in your own skin but it’s okay if you wanna change the body that you came in.” It’s all about what you express yourself as and what you feel from the inside, the vibe. Just keep the crown high queen.

You have an incredible talent – what looks of yours are your highlights?

I guess I have to give it to my Psychedelic skull which is my personal favourite. It happened when I had a lack of makeup supplies and was having a low time in my life. Nevertheless, it still turned out to be one of the most appreciated ones to date. Also, the Graphic Art piece that I did inspire by Nikkie tutorials is yet another major one as it gave me a huge exposure, obviously, there were flaws but if there has to be something that increased my content’s reach, it was the same.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Okay so the first time I became a makeup geek was when I watched RuPaul’s drag race for the first time. Not gonna lie I am a depression survivor and had taken anxiety pills till last March. Getting off from a toxic relationship made me lose most of my individuality and ambitions for over 2 years. From a straight A student I dropped down to failing subjects. I knew I had to let go but you know it’s the feeling that comes from inside that makes you forget it all at once.

This feeling happened to me when I watched the drag queens slay the stage in the show. Their determination towards their work, their sass, their pure talent is what inspired me so much it’s hard to put it in words. I still follow a lot of their tutorials. That is how Instant Influencer happened. Talking about my makeup looks, they are generally inspired by anyone from the beauty industry that I find one hundred percent talent and a must recreate- could be a beauty guru or an upcoming artist.

What has been the biggest challenge of practicing makeup?

Oh yes that’s something so important like Girl makeup is EXPENSIVE! Believe me it costs a hell lot. These days there have been a lot of affordable brands in the market but you know the quality stays the same. This is actually somethin’ I ve noticed over the years from my personal experience and other’s as well. I ve seen many young creative minds  not even trying to get into the industry even if they want to and are great at it cause, they can’t afford to get makeup supplies!

The products are just so over the top. I remember saving for buying a good foundation that suits my skin, or the first James Charles palette I bought. The lack of availability of big makeup brands like Dragun cosmetics, Morphe, Fenty beauty etc. is another trouble as then you gotta import stuff which obviously costs more, could be unauthentic or damaged and not available to all.

How can we de-establish societal norms against men using makeup?

I think that is something we all should have normalized by now and I find it funny that it hadn’t been done to date. Who cares, like if there’s talent and potential how does gender matter anyway? I actually wanna ask these people if they would be interested in getting their makeup/styling done by someone who matches the gender criteria but possibly has a worse taste than Deepak Kalal.

Personally, a lot of my friends detached themselves from me as they found my content too ‘Feminine’ after I started doing makeup. It was when Vogue Italia happened to me which made a lot of my ‘gone’ friends come back and introspect. While on the other hand, I’ve seen creators focusing solely on the fact that they are guys and they put on makeup for views, hardly making an effort on their content but it gets hyped up the cause, after all, it’s a guy with makeup!

The point I’m trying to make here is Normalising ain’t being non-supportive to talent or overdoing the hype, just let one be. Even if you don’t understand someone’s choices, respect them. Is it that hard?

Rapid Fire:

  • What do you love most about makeup?
    • It helps me to express myself the way I want. Just like outfits, makeup gives me a way to visually express my moods and vibe.
    • It boosts my self-esteem.
    • I’ve always loved art and creative stuff, and with makeup, it’s all evident I guess.
    • It’s an escape place for me to run away from what I pretend to be to keep my loved ones happy.
  • What famous artists have influenced you, and how?
    • James Charles is on top of the ladder followed by Jake Warden and Nikita Dragun. Nikita for giving me my LA fantasy and bringing out the sassy-badass vibe from within me. Jake Warden is someone who I can completely relate to. And James! Who makes me fall in love with makeup over and over again every time I feel like giving up.
  • What three makeup items should one not leave home without?
    • A suitable foundation, a matching concealer, a good black liner and a blush is a must. Personally, I find chapsticks one hundred percent love so it’s something I don’t wanna miss out on ever.
  • What are some of the most makeup styles to incorporate?
    • Look after your skin! Use a primer pre-makeup and use only makeup wipes post makeup to put it off as. And as for face paints trust only trusted brands else your skin is gonna get bombarded!
  • What is your boldest makeup look to date?
    • The Graphic Art sub drag look I did last September, was the first-ever makeup look that I did with a wig I received on my birthday. Cannot even explain how scared I was to see people’s reactions. Glad, it turned out to be a major success.
  • If you could spread a rumour about yourself, what would it be?
    • Jhope and I have dated in the past and are exes now. And then I d let them know that it was mutual. Lmao, Jhope is my bias to the moon. I love him no cap. So what better could it be than to get my name attached with him. I wouldn’t say currently dating as what proof would I have lmao.
