Interview with Himanee Bhatia

What or who inspired you to become an actor? Did you always want to be an actor?

Acting makes me feel .. alive! My biggest driving force and inspiration are the stories of the people around me, my great need of expression. I feel I have always had a massive desire to express myself – and what better than acting? In which other professions can one live so many lives in just one life? To act is to feel, to dig into our emotions we have suppressed somewhere. I think deep down I always knew this is what I love. I always wanted to act, perform, be on stage or on camera.

I remember when my Nani was in the hospital, she was really sick, as a 4-year old I’d go to her room to make her laugh and cheer up by acting like a very iconic character called Komolika from an Indian daily soap called Kausauti Zindagi ki. She would be in splits of laughter and would always tell my mum – “Dekhna, Ek din to Teri Kudi ne actress hi banna hai”, which literally means “one day your daughter is going to be an actress.”

Even during my school interview when I was told to recite a poem- I started singing a song called Maine Payal hai chankai and started dancing – giving a proper performance! My principal was amazed to see how a kid could love performing so much. During my school and college days I would take part in plays and dances. I did an advertisement for fun in college for IDEA 3G network and also won a contest called ‘Veet- Be the Diva’, with my picture coming in the newspaper, Hindustan Times.

Somewhere all of this was for my love for being in the spotlight and performing. During my final year at Delhi University, I got campus recruitment at a company called KPMG. I had just finished by Bcom Honours at Sri Venkateshwara College, DU and was working as a risk consultant. I studied law on the side. Even during my days as a consultant, I remember blogging and modelling because somewhere my love for the camera never went away. I always love writing as well, and in fact wrote a short film on mental health called ‘Act Normal’ which is on YouTube.

I wrote and acted in it. Many filmmakers, both in India and internationally reached out to me through social media and emails, urging me to act more and more. There was an international filmmaker who was very insistent that I pursue acting full time. I joined a theatre group in Delhi and acted in many plays. I feel you always know you want to act, it just takes the right moment to realize is that it’s what truly makes your soul happy. And well- I did that.

I quit my corporate job at KPMG, after getting a promotion. I risked it all to act. And here I am. So long story short, I always knew I wanted to act- I guess I took that leap of faith after an interesting journey. In fact, I feel as an actor, one must always be inspired. Inspiration is all around. Life inspires me to act. Sunsets, happy tears after a moving song, the very emotion you feel when you hug your loved ones, everything! Luckily we have so many great actors to look up to.

I am personally very inspired by the late Sridevi, the late Irrfan, the late Sushant Singh Rajput, the late Heath Ledger, Shah Rukh Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, Ayyushmaan Khurana, Rajkummar Rao, Amit Sadh, and Kate Winslet.

Has a character you played every altered your personality?

Yes, many. I feel every character leaves something with you and takes something from you. For example, in life, I’m a very sensitive person. My parents call me Alice in wonderland, saying I’m a dreamer and too naive. My friends say I am too trusting. Recently, a character I had played called Ghazal, which is in my next short film titled ‘Blink’, which will be out soon on a reputed OTT platform, inspired me to think on my feet, and definitely stand up for myself more. I think Ghazal helps Himanee to be a little more street smart and call people out on their bullshit when required. So yes, Ghazal altered Himanee to be a little bolder in life and not fear, anything.

What makes a good co-star?

To be a good co-star is to be a giving actor. This is something I learned during my theatre days, that acting is like a dance, if one partner fails, so does the other. Always act for your co-actor. That’s what I like to do. Also, patience is a great virtue to have as an actor and co-star.

What was your very first performance like?

Himanee’s First Performance

All my life I’ve been performing! Haha. Even during my playschool days I remember when I was not even in the play- I ran to the stage and enacted a famous Bollywood actress. My next performance was in playschool again, and my role was of a sunflower, coincidentally my favourite flower. I was cast as that due to, what my teachers called ‘sunshine smile’. I performed all the time. Though my first camera performance was in my college days on a student-made short Film about body shaming.

What’s your dream role?

I have a few actually. An army officer, a musician, a historic character , a queen, a superhero character and definitely a criminal as well. Also something like a Bond girl would be super cool!

You acted in the show, Neighbour’s Kitchen by Hindustan times? How was it like working on such a unique project?

It was a great experience, as it was the Hindustan times’ first-ever web show. So everything was as new to them as for anyone else. We worked together as a team. My character, Anamika Ahire is totally different from me. She is a nutritionist who is very mindful about what she eats, and I, on the other hand, can’t live without my chocolates and Aloo Paranthaas, being a true Punjabi! She also won’t show an iota of emotion, and on the other hand I’m a bag full of emotions and I can never hide them. It was a lovely experience to play a character so different.

We had great fun. It was a hectic shoot- we shot for 6 episodes in 6 days. Since it was an ensemble cast, we all had great bonding. All my co-actors are beautiful people. Felt like family.

You are also starring in upcoming Netflix projects “Decoupled” starring R Madhavan and ‘Eternally confused and eager for love’ by Zoya Akhtar. What can you tell us about each of these projects?

Decoupled and Eternally confused and eager for love are both for Netflix. I have interesting parts in both of them. Since I can’t talk too much about them, I’ll tell you a little about the shows.

Decoupled is a light-hearted show which stars the brilliant actor, R Madhavan. It is directed by the very talented director Hardik Mehta, who directed the lovely film Kaamyaab. It was a great experience working with the whole team.

Eternally confused and eager for love is being produced by Zoya Akhtar’s production Tiger baby films. Zoya Akhtar is one of my favourite people in the industry and I was elated to know when I had got the part! It’s again a great show and talks about the journey of a young person.

I had a great experience on both projects.

What is your advice to actors?

Learn your craft. If you want to act, I would advise doing theatre and if you’re not getting cast, then create your own work. Pick up monologues and practice. Find a friend with a camera, a writer, and you act. Create, don’t be dependent on people. My short film act normal, which was written and acted by me and shot by a friend, reached people internationally, connecting me to filmmakers across the world.

For hosting, I feel the more you do the more you learn. I learnt on the job, and for starters what really helped me was being a good listener. I feel if you’re a good listener, you automatically communicate better. Besides that, just be real and listen to yourself. There will be a lot of noise, a lot of people who will give you reasons you can’t live your dream, they will try to tell you how you don’t belong here- for the longest time I was criticized for my curly hair! PLEASE don’t listen to them!

Some get success in a day, some in a year, but nobody’s story is easier than the other’s. Don’t let the world make you feel insecure. We all fall, we all cry but when we rise- we have the ability to touch the sky. So let people talk, these guys will show off how they knew you years later. Keep a close circle of friends who are good for your mental health. The people around you can make or break you.

Always always always listen to your intuition, It has guided me when even my methods, learnings and logic fails. And never stop dreaming because you never know, today might be the day you’re in for a big surprise. You chose this journey because it makes you feel alive, so don’t let anyone or anything make you feel any different. And please, don’t forget to have fun! It’s a bumpy road but a fun one, I promise.

Rapid Fire:

  • Have you ever taken anything from set?
Initially when we were making short films during my KPMG days, usually my house was the ‘set!’ Later, One of the projects I worked on had a rope with which I’m tied up with, by a kidnapper. After the shoot was over I took it. That rope is a part of the box I have of little things I’ve taken from the set- but don’t get me wrong- I’m not a thief and I always take permission!
  • If you hosted a TV Show, what would it be about and what would it be called?
Could we have a reality show with me and my dog travelling the whole world doing cool things, eating yummy food, and wearing coordinated outfits? I’d like to call it “Paw-some world”!
  • What is one rumour you would like to spread about yourself?
Delhi girl Himanee Bhatia is the next Bond girl!
  • What would you title your autobiography?
    Alice in Wonderland
  • If you woke up as the following, what would you first say?
    • Kriti Vij: I’d be saying only happy things because she’s such a fun person! Oh and blushing, because everyone loves her – and her work!
    • Abhishek Banerjee: Hathoda le aao, Box office Todna hai apni amazing performance se!
    • Zoya Akhtar: Bhaag bhaag bhaag , aayi TIGER !
    • R Madhavan: Overwhelmed with talent!
