Rule of thumb: If your hair and or scalp feels oily, wash it. Malassezia is no joke and it is quite common. It can start on the scalp and cause unwanted issues like Fungal Acne. If you have dandruff, you might have Malassezia as well. Try ingredients like Salicylic Acid and Pyrithione Zinc.

You can exfoliate your scalp with products such as anti dandruff shampoo. If your hair is dry, you may want to try washing it once a week. Your shampoo routine will depend on the severity of build up. I would recommend the following Shampoo cycles:

  1. Greasy Hair: At least Every Other Day or Every Day. (depending on if you exfoliate)
  2. Sweat from Exercise: At least 3-4 times a week.
  3. Dry Hair: Shampoo at least once every two weeks if you exfoliate your scalp. If no exfoliation, at least once a week.
  4. Dry Scalp: Exfoliate to remove dead skin or dandruff build up at least 2-3 times a week. Shampooing may vary based on hair type, as opposed to scalp type.

2. Try a Hair Mild Shampoo for Better and Scalp Health

Shampooing is critical for maintaining good scalp health and overall healthy hair. Mild shampoos simply remove build-up without overly stripping. You might want to consider saving the fragrance and nourishing stuff such as excessive oils for your conditioner — there’s no need for too much of it in your shampoo.

Exfoliating shampoos will address issues like dandruff, oil build-up etc. and depending on your schedule for shampooing, you will probably rotate between a mild shampoo and exfoliating one for clarifying the scalp. I recommend exfoliating your scalp at least once a week while using a mild shampoo if your hair tends to get oily, or if you workout/sweat a lot; regardless of issues listed above (although, they tend to be linked to oily scalp).

Try these two steps for a healthier scalp. Be sure to condition your hair after each wash, but, the extent of how moisturizing your conditioner should be will depend on your hair type.
