Disgusting Homophobia in Schools

Disgusting Homophobia in Schools

Sexual orientation or gender identity is not the basis for discrimination, harassment, or bullying, and schools must take steps to lessen the extent of homophobia.

Homophobia refers to a dislike or prejudice toward homosexual people ie. People who are attracted to people of their own gender. Homophobic people discriminate against such people and treat them as people from some different planet. To date, homosexual people struggle to be accepted in society and to find their place on this Earth.

Presence Of Homophobia At School

A school is a place we go to discover ourselves and to become equal individuals and citizens of the future society. For holistic growth, equality and non-discrimination must prevail. Even schools are not safe from the clutches of homophobia.

Pervasive bullying and harassment persist, and questions are raised upon the safety of LGBT students. The school culture has stringent gender and sexuality norms and expectations. Those who challenge these and don’t conform to the norms are undermined, inequality prevails and their safety threatened.

Over the past decade, numerous incidents of murders and suicide by and of the students have come up. Bullying impacts their mental health, and they are motivated to take drastic steps like suicide.

Cause and Effect

15-year-old Lawrence King was murdered in his middle school in 2008, by a boy to whom he had been given a valentine. A year later, 11-year-old Carl Walker-Hoover committed suicide; due to years of daily anti-gay harassment and bullying at school. These incidents are heartbreaking and expose the dark homophobia in schools. Schools also fail to include a gay-straight alliance club (GSAs) or LGBT-inclusive curriculum, promoting and educating kids on the normality of this. Despite legal action, schools have failed to maintain safety and raise awareness.

In order to ensure this, they must try and implement the following strategies:

  1. Implementing non-discriminatory and anti-bullying policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity
  2. The intervention of teachers in bullying and harassment cases. They must be taught effective intervention methods
  3. Availability of information, resources, and support at school about LGBT issues;
  4. Presence of school-based support groups or clubs (often called “gay-straight alliances” or GSAs)
  5. Inclusion of LGBT people or issues in the school curriculum
