Nature? Well, what better place than Amsterdam! Amsterdam becomes the sixth international travel destination and the sixth part of this travel series!

Amsterdam

Amsterdam – June 2015

Age: 12 Years

Note: We toured Amsterdam in 1 day, so all these locations were chosen and visited based on the amount of time we had to visit each.

Point 1: Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum (National Museum) was founded in 1798 to house the country’s huge collection of rare art and antiquities. It boasts 8,000 important paintings spread across 250 rooms of this sprawling building.

In addition to its paintings, the Rijksmuseum boasts a well-stocked library of more than 35,000 books and manuscripts, as well as numerous fascinating displays dealing with the development of art and culture in the Netherlands. Of special note are its collections of traditional handicrafts, medieval sculpture, and modern art styles.

Point 2: Remambrandt Statue

Rembrandt, along with his wife Saskia, spent the happiest years of his life in the house on the Jodenbreestraat, now home to the Rembrandt House Museum. It was here, in the Jewish Quarter, that he found models for his Biblical themes, and where he painted the sights from his many outings along the canals. Rembrandt lived here for 20 years, and the house has been furnished in 17th-century style with numerous etchings and personal objects.

Point 3: Oude Kerk

The Oude Kerk (Old Church) – built in 1306 and the city’s oldest structure – remains unchanged since Rembrandt’s time. The first hall church in North Holland, this splendid piece of architecture became the model for many other churches in the region.

After exploring this beautiful historical building, take a two-minute stroll across the bridge to Zeedijk, one of Amsterdam’s oldest streets. Many houses along here lean at an angle from the vertical, and the 15th-century house at No. 1 is thought to be the oldest surviving building in the city.

Point 4: The National Monument

The monument is a place where young people from all over the world meet. If you’d like to learn a little more about the history of the Netherlands during WWII, then a visit to The Resistance Museum (Verzetsmuseum) is a must. In addition to portraying the role of the resistance during the German occupation, the museum provides a great deal of information related to civilian life during this harrowing period of history.

Point 5: Canal Rides

The most thrilling part about visiting Amsterdam would be its historic and legendary canals. These charming waterways were built in order to fulfill several civic functions and have played a pivotal role within Amsterdam’s history. Although certainly impressive, Amsterdam’s inner canal belt was originally designed to create an unbroken barrier around the entire city. However, due to an economic crisis in 1672 these plans were never finalised and eventually abandoned, leaving the eastern quarter of Amsterdam’s canals unfinished.

Being an UNESCO heritage site, this is a must visit when going to Amsterdam. The canal boat ride takes you across a journey that allows you to steal picturesque glances at important landmarks and museums such as Westerkerk, Anne Frank Huis and Museum van Loon and the hundreds of antique, 17th century townhouses on their banks.

Although the canals are now protected (and often over 400 years old) they still play an important role within Amsterdam’s city life. Besides being one of the main modes of transport around Amsterdam, the canals also host several events throughout the year, including a huge parade during Pride and other outdoor events such as de Grachtenfestival.

Best Moment:

Definitely the Canal Trip – it was antiquity!
