Devastating Oppression in China: Uyghur Muslims

The Uyghur Muslims are being oppressed in China, and it’s like the Holocaust all over again.

In a far west region of China, lies a supposedly autonomous area known as Xinjiang, China’s largest region, where Muslims populate half of the 26 million people who are settled there. Although the area is considered to be autonomous, the Chinese state does not allow the region to be one; the Uighur Muslims had independence from Communist China for a period of time at the beginning of the 20th century, however, China gained full control over them by 1949. Currently, the main issue pertaining to the Uighur Muslims is the oppression they are facing from the Chinese government because of the religion they practice – Islam.

China’s Discrimination Towards Uighur Muslims

China has been and continues to hold about a million Uighur Muslims in concentration camps in Xinjiang. Unfortunately, this tragedy resembles one which is felt by every single person in the world, the Holocaust – a horrible time of terror and fright that we as humans swore would not allow to occur once more. The ethnically Turkic Muslims have been stripped of their own identity and are being forced to adhere to a new one; the central government has taken it upon themselves to “cleanse” these helpless people. Furthermore, China is denying having any concentration camps for the said people although there is clear proof that there are Uighur Muslims being forced to turn against Islam and its laws.

And, this is not a sudden turn that the central government has had towards these people; the Chinese government has been against them for countless years. The communist government has gradually limited the rights the Uighur Muslims have in all aspects of their life. For instance, University students in Xinjiang have said that they were banned from fasting during the month of Ramadan in 2014. Their jobs, families, property, everything, were stripped from them.

The women and men are raped, sexually abused, and gone through the most extreme of tortures all while being forced to renounce their faith. As I have stated before, this is the Holocaust happening all over again and if we do not band together to stop this from happening any further, the consequences will surely be malicious – for everyone.
