An Exciting Account of Travelling in South Africa

Wildlife and rejuvenation? Well, what better place than South Africa! South Africa becomes the fourth international travel destination and the fourth part of this travel series!

South Africa – April 2014
Age: 11 Years

Point 1: Kruger National Park, South Africa

After boarding the tiniest plane from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park, I was full with excitement, especially after all the fun I had last time visiting a National Park in Kenya! At Kruger, we stayed at The Thornybush Game Reserve, which is superbly lavish – from an exquisite choice of breakfast to the aesthetic lantern-lit dinners in the lawn at night – they are truly comfortable in the wilderness. They even organized an Easter Egg hunt which was the first of its kind I had ever partaken in and it was quite some fun running around a huge resort with kids my age!

Point 2: Cape Town

Everything in Cape Town revolves around Table Mountain. However, due to poor weather in the earlier months of the year, our cable trip to Table Mountain was cancelled due to haze. At Cape Town, we visited the V&A Waterfront which is a fantastic place to shop and dine. I would highly recommend the “Heart at Work” shop which sells crafted gifts for the body, home and soul, to represent the people, animals and culture of ancient earth and Africa.

Another place to target at Cape Town would be the Signal Hill and Noon Gun. At noon every day (except Sundays and public holidays), a cannon activated by an electronic impulse from the Observatory fires a single shot. In earlier days this “noon gun” served to give the exact time to ships anchored in the bay. Tourists are welcome to attend a free presentation on the history of the Noon Gun at the Lion Battery and then stay to watch the firing.

Signal Hill also hosts one of the most vibrant streets I have seen – Bo Kaap. Gently rolling streets lined with brightly colored houses greet visitors in the Cape Malay (commonly referred to as Bo-Kaap) neighborhood, located in the heart of the city at the foot of Signal Hill.

If you visit the Cape Point Lighthouse at The Cape of Good Hope, the view is stunning! It’s as if you are standing on the edge of the world as you are surrounded by rugged rocks and sheer cliffs towering more than 650 feet above the sea. You will probably be sure to take a picture of yourself standing next to the large prominent sign that says, “Cape of Good Hope – The Most South Western Point of the African Continent.”

Finally, there was the Boulders Beach, a sheltered beach made up of a number of inlets sandwiched between granite boulders. Its major claim to fame is the colony of African penguins which makes its home on the beach in the town centre. You can get up close and personal with penguins here. This was probably my favourite part because seeing penguins waddling around was adorable!

Point 3: Sun City

Sun city South Africa Probal Bhattacharya

It’s a huge resort, rather than a city, but I can completely understand why they call it a city. It’s massive with its own monorail and buses to get around, a water park, golf course, shopping centre, many hotels, apartments and a ton of attractions.

One of the top things to do in Sun City is the Valley of Waves – Sun City’s very own water park. As water parks go, the Sun City Valley of Waves isn’t very big. There’s a wave pool with a beach, a lazy river and some water slides. The lazy river was colder but extremely fun.

Connected to the Sun Central Mall is the very enjoyable Maze Of the Lost City. Entering from the mall you have to cross a 100m long suspension bridge to reach it, which is a nice bit of immersion. The maze is neither very big nor too hard and there is an amazing restaurant that serves fabulous hot chocolate at the end of the maze, so I guess that could be your motive to crack the route!

Finally, there was a crocodile camp, Kamp Kwena, which lets you hold baby crocodiles and play with them! As scary as the thought may be, crocodiles have surprisingly smooth skin, but their cuteness is truly limited to being a baby!

Trip Rating:

Best Moment:

Definitely Sun City – it was fabulous!
